THE DECOR Exotic, eccentric and eco-conscious. London-based Bergman Design House took the arty vibe of South Kensington as inspiration. Owl and monkey motifs predominate, in keeping with the belief that this is a destination for the wise owl who cares for the planet and the curious monkey One of the Club Flats who is looking for great experiences. Hence the Owl and Monkey cocktail bar, where alcohol-free alternatives are popular. THE ROOMS Rather than soulless floor numbers, the Club Flats, located on streets named after famous residents from the local area, are in different configurations from Club Originals, Club Class, Club Vaults and Club Collection. I stayed in a cosy Club Attic with a kitchenette, panelled living area with bedroom and en suite bathroom decorated in lush velvets and tweed. My only complaint was that all windows Courtyard area were sealed, a personal bug-bear. FACILITIES The Private Club includes two bars, a screening room and extensive wellness spaces. There is also access to The Other Space, which includes a state-of-theart gym designed in collaboration with Reece Bowers, a The kitchenette British track athlete, with an indoor vitality pool, sauna in one of the and steam room. DINING The menu at the all-day street café, The Other Kitchen, where breakfast is served, has been designed by Londons youngest Michelin-starred chef, Asimakis Chaniotis, and head chef Gary White. I recommend the small delicious sharing plates and salads. VERDICT Clearly taking on Soho House, with its combination of apartment-style living with club facilities and hotel services on tap (guests communicate with the young team of nattily dressed house jacks via WhatsApp), the offering is impressive. T Alan and Eva in Athens heres nothing quite as special as having an insider recommendation when travelling, and a good pal gave me lots of information on Athens. This wonderful city is intriguing and the perfect place for a short romantic city break. Steer clear of Plaka, which is tourist central, and instead stay in the chic Kolonaki district at the base of Mount Lykavettos, near the National Gardens. Here, visitors will find an abundance of great galleries, museums (Museum of Cycladic Art and Benaki Museum being two), as well as many terrific dining options We stayed at the Coco-Mat Athens Jumelle, a quirky boutique hotel bang in the middle of the action, located in a former neoclassical mansion. Apart from elegant interiors, it has quite possibly the most comfortable beds in the world. The mattresses are made from sustainable coconut fibres, ensuring a sound sleep. Other details from the Zealots of Nature products in the bathroom to the cute outdoor terrace for breakfast mean this is a little gem. The treelined streets surrounding the hotel are reminiscent of the Marais, Paris, with outdoor cafés where locals sip on strong Greek coffee or, even stronger lemon Ouzo cocktails. Kolonaki is where youll find the best shopping in Athens, from luxury brands (on Voukourestiou street) to quirky boutiques. I discovered incredible forever treasure at Katerina Vassous jewellery store full of handcrafted contemporary pieces. I love her tribal collection using gunmetal and feathers. As I had visited Athens when my sons were young (from the age of ten my kids were gifted cultural trips for their birthdays as I have always believed memories are more important than things) and we had already toured the usual historical sites like the Acropolis, my partner Alan and I took a ferry out to one of the closer Saronic islands. It is a mere 30 minutes to the peaceful island of Aegina with its rolling hills and walking trails. Its idyllic in the early spring. We walked up the gentle 8km route to the temple of Aphaea, a 6th-century Doric structure, and then taxied back for a sunset dinner overlooking the port before returning to Athens. Greek shipping tycoons enjoy tax privileges in Greece and contribute instead with hospitals, galleries and cultural centres. One must-visit is the Stavros Modern Love at NCMA Niarchos Cultural Centre. Built in 2016, its amazing architecturally and covers a vast space with gardens, cafés, a huge library and canals. With Valentines Day in mind, we also visited the Modern Love exhibition at NMCA contemporary museum, a thoughtprovoking exhibition of 14 young artists which focuses on digital technology and its influence on intimate human relationships. To complete our Athenian adventure, we discovered Barbounaki, an excellent fish restaurant just around the corner from the hotel, with a Michelin-starred sister in the port of Piraeus.
