The Peninsula London is in a prime location in Belgravia
rish designer Paul Costelloe is one of the opening shows at London
Fashion Week, which takes place from February 17-21. The hottest
ticket is undoubtedly the Burberry show, where creative director
Daniel Lee will present his first collection. Many hope that Lee will
reinvigorate the label in the same way he brought magic to Bottega
Veneta. If Burberry has been faltering, the same cannot be said of
the capitals hotel scene. Its thriving, with plenty of hip new hotels
opening this spring to explore for drinks, dinner or a weekend visit.
Raffles first London hotel, THE OWO, has seen the historic Old
War Office in Whitehall (once the offices of Winston Churchill and
Ian Fleming), transformed into a new dining and wellness destination with nine
restaurants and three bars, as well as a spa bringing together Guerlain experts and
movement specialists Pillar Wellbeing; www.theowo.london. Over in Mayfair, two
hotel groups are vying for business. MANDARIN ORIENTAL is taking over Hanover
Square where it is opening a second, more low-key hotel than its Knightsbridge
sibling. Of note, its signature restaurant, Akira Back, features Michelin-starred
Korean fusion cuisine; www.mandarinoriental.com. At the nature-inspired, informal
1 HOTEL, which overlooks Green Park in Mayfair, in lieu of cut flowers there will be
living walls, no single-use plastic and a farm-to-fork restaurant; www.1hotels.com.
For a front row view of King Charles IIIs coronation on May 6, THE PENINSULA,
opposite Buckingham Palace and Wellington Arch in Belgravia, is one of Londons
biggest openings. A grand courtyard lobby, rooms and suites by Peter Marino (known
for his work in Chanel flagship stores), a shopping arcade, rooftop bar, Cantonese
restaurant and spa are among its attractions; www.peninsula.com. For devotees of
Spanish designer Jaime Hayon, his ARTOTEL fuses art, design and hospitality next to
the iconic Battersea Power Station. A rooftop infinity pool is due to open later in the
year too; www.artotellondonbattersea.com. In Soho, THE BROADWICK is the first
London boutique hotel designed by Martin Brudnizki of The Ivy Dublin fame. He
describes the hotel as your eccentric grandmothers Soho townhouse. Thats worth
a peep, as is its wraparound terrace, rooftop bar and Sicilian-inspired restaurant;
www.broadwicksoho.com. THE BOTREE, opening in July, is a great base from which
to enjoy Regents Park, a concert at Wigmore Hall or an exhibition at The Wallace

served in the 108 Pantry. The menu of the all-day 108 Brasserie and Bar focuses
on international favourites (its heated terrace feels like a local restaurant). Its also
great for nibbles, cocktails and people watching, and has its own 108 Gin (distilled
in a copper still called Isabella by the bar). The sleek art-filled Lobby Bar, divided
into different seasonal areas, is a great place for spotting regulars (such as John
Galliano, who pops in for breakfast). FACILITIES The Third Space Spa and Gym in
the basement, (with an 18m indoor pool), offers cardio, combat, core conditioning
and cycling classes, as well as Elemis treatments. MUST VISIT Any retail therapy

beautiful Edwardian galleries, gather colourful
Italian soaps at Ortigia or candles from Trudon.
For refuelling, there are posh eateries galore in
the vicinity (Chiltern Firehouse, Nobu, Locanda
Locatelli). Make time for Austrian Fischers for
brunch, La Fromagerie with its cheese library
for tastings, and Donostia for Basque jamóns,
gildas and croquetas. The Wallace Collection and

Bond Street tube is a short stroll. VERDICT Chic

CHECKING IN: MIDDLE EIGHT, COVENT GARDEN
Named after the middle-ly bit of the song where changes come in, that musical
theme and idea of newness sit beautifully throughout the hotel, just a few minutes
walk from the Royal Opera House. An open, golden lobby with crotchet-like
pendant lamps has the architectural feel of a modern opera house sculpted with
acoustic material. The polished wood and lights glimmer and tease like the great
boutique hotels of the other SoHo across the pond and rooms hit all the high
notes, with everything you need to escape the city in the city Sonos speakers,
swish rooms and suites with extra elements like
indoor living walls and outdoor terraces.
The Sycamore restaurant is perfect for
grazing on Northern Italian delights perched
on a bar stool in a generous, airy space. QT,
Middle Eights vibrant speakeasy bar has worldrenowned saxophonist Leo Green and his
orchestra in residence, providing a real break
from the verse/chorus/verse of what youd
expect at any other five-star hotel. Very catchy.
