The Chanel Cruise 2019, held in the Grand Palais in Paris. ships numerous lounges offer plenty of space to relax, while the central Plaza Mayor bar has been designed to evoke Salamanca citys spectacular main square. If a luxury cruise is more your bag, the six star upmarket lines such as Silversea, Seabourn, Cunard and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, offer plenty of scope for a champagne-and-couture experience, though the ante has been upped by the addition of the Evrima part of the Ritz Carltons Yacht Collection. Setting sail for the Caribbean and the Med, with a personal concierge assigned to every suite and a Michelin-starred menu, its highly sophisticated. On my vision board is one of Belmonds posh barge cruises. The fleet of bijou Bateaux Belmond, or floating villas for up to six passengers, are a leisurely way to enjoy the Champagne region (aboard its new Coquelicot) or enjoy the castles and wineries of Dijon (on Fleur de Lys), Burgundy and Provence. Regardless of whether you book a barge or a behemoth mega-ship, on a ship the biggest luxury is space. Insiders suggest that aside from timing voyages carefully (avoiding school holidays) the best way to maximise space is to study your chosen ship and compare its size with the number of passengers it carries. This can vary enormously. A larger ship can feel just as spacious as a smaller ship, it all depends on what is known as the passenger space ratio (PSR). This is worked out by dividing the ships gross registered tonnage by the number of passengers on board. The higher the figure, the more space passengers will enjoy. Consistently scoring top in terms of passenger popularity and its PSR is Royal Caribbean Internationals Icon of the Seas. Also in the top ten are Celebrity Cruises Celebrity Apex, Fred Olsens Bolette and Borealis and Saga Cruises Spirit of Discovery. As for dress codes, a smart casual rule applies aboard most ships. Cunard is the most dressy, while Seabourn has recently relaxed its dress code, welcoming smart jeans until 6pm. The only sartorial faux pas, it seems, is wearing swimwear inside. As a cruise novice, last autumn I boarded Royal Caribbeans Wonder of the Seas (officially the worlds largest cruise ship) with some trepidation. ITINERARY: A seven-night Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona taking in Palma, Marseille, Florence (La Spezia), Rome and Naples. VIBE: Go big or go home mega ship. FACTS: At capacity, it holds 5,734 passengers and 2,204 crew. On my voyage, (during half term!) there were some 1,500 staff and almost 4,000 adults including 500 children. That sounds ghastly but wasnt. PASSENGERS: Diverse: from seasoned cruisers to multigenerational families of all nationalities. Solo and LGBTQ passengers had the option of participating in (self-led) get togethers. STATEROOMS: The 2,867 cabins, on 16 guest decks, run the gamut from economical inside rooms, outside cabins with oversized windows to and suites. My ocean view balcony cabin was quiet, spacious and serviced twice per day. DINING: Apart from the main three-storey dining room, there some 30 restaurants and bars plus speciality restaurants which charge additional supplements. I found the overall standard to be superior to the imagined buffet bedlam. DECOR: On steroids (and often surreal), high spec and spotless. FACILITIES: The ship is divided into eight neighbourhoods. Special mention goes to the interactive open air play area for kids the Wonder Playscape, which includes The Ultimate Abyss, the tallest slide at sea and the Flowrider surf simulator and more. ENTERTAINMENT: A daily programme delivered via app highlighted the numerous things to do on and off shore, as well as evening shows from singers to comedians, tap dance troupes to ice spectaculars, art auctions, and tribute bands, karaoke nights, and a nightclub. WELLNESS: Top notch spa and gym facilities also included interesting lectures from footprint and postural analysis to IV therapy consultations plus aesthetic tweakments, should you need a top up. DRESS CODE: More Love Boat than Titanic. Smart casual, there were optional theme nights white, elegant, tropical etc. VERDICT: This cruise can be as relaxing or as adventurous as you make it. Highlights for me were visiting Palma and Naples, increasing my dailystep count due to the size of the ship, and watching the horizon from my balcony.
